SANCTUARY

noun, /ˈsæŋktʃuˌeri/  : a place of refuge and protection.

Access to nature has always been an important indicator of the quality of life in large urban areas. Nowhere is this felt as much as in New York, a city of 8 million people where access to green spaces has historically been limited and subject to stark inequalities.  Across the five boroughs of this metropolis, parks represent a rare opportunity for residents to find a moment of grounding, solace, and a renewed connection with others, nature and themselves.

Project developed as part of the Dcoumentary Practice and Visual Storytelling program at the International Center of Photography, New York.
